Cultivating Stillness in the Season of Advent

Adviento Práctica Espiritual

What if it really wasn't that hard to find more peace, more quiet, more room in your heart for the Christ child to be born? Hawkins will guide you—calmly and simply—through the busy season of Advent, and you'll come out of the four weeks more centered, rested, and spiritually renewed.

"The idea for this book arose from my own experience of contemplative prayer, prayer that finds its home, not in busy doing or speaking, but in becoming, in being," writes Hawkins.

Some Advent titles promise reflective simplicity but actually require a lot of time or reading; Simply Wait is the exception. The exercises are very doable and focus on anticipation, hope, patience, and obedience. Questions and journal space are provided to help you contemplate more fully. This is an ideal individual or small-group study; a guide for groups is included.

Instead of doing more and moving faster, find a way to reflect more, worry less, and connect authentically to the season with the grace-filled wisdom of Simply Wait.

Pamela C. Hawkins is an author, artist, and pastor living in Nashville, Tennessee. She has written about the Christian spiritual life through prayers, liturgies, articles, small-group studies, and devotional books. At the heart of Hawkins's ministry is a love for the gospel, a commitment to make God's unconditional love extended to all people, and a desire to live a more prayerful life. Hawkins holds a Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt University Divinity School, a Doctor of Ministry in Christian Spirituality from Columbia Theological School, and is a regular retreatant at the Benedictine community of St. Meinrad Archabbey.

"Prepared or not, we are signed up for the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas marathon and will hurtle toward the finish line. But there is an alternate route. Enter these pages, savor the words they hold out to you, and you will experience deep quietude and welcoming spaciousness. Follow the guidance, and you will arrive on Christmas Day wrapped in the peace that is not of this world."
